Summer’s no fun when you’re sick! Cases of COVID in Utah and the United States are rising, fueled by the BA.5 Omicron variant, which appears to be one of the most transmissible strains of coronavirus yet. Have a happy holiday weekend, but be sure to spread the pioneer spirit, not germs.
Here are 24 ways to keep yourself from getting bucked off by a virus this Pioneer Day:
- Stay home when you’re sick.
- Wash your hands more often and for longer than you typically do.
- Space out seating when hosting a gathering.
- Cover your cough (but not with your hand).
- Avoid large crowds if you’re at high risk of infection or have a compromised immune system.
- Consider a mask in packed indoor settings.
- Sanitize your hands often.
- Wash your hands after using the restroom.
- Don’t wipe your nose with the back of your hand.
- Sanitize phones, keys, wallets and other germ-mobiles.
- Avoid contact with high-touch surfaces like door handles, gas pumps, and handrails.
- Consider COVID-19 vaccines and boosters.
- Always wash your hands before you eat or prepare food.
- Cover your sneezes (again, not with your hand).
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands.
- Wash your hands after your blow your nose.
- Whenever possible, hold events outdoors with plenty of space.
- Get tested if you have COVID-like symptoms.
- Wash your hands after leaving a public place.
- Stay hydrated! Drink plenty of water (adults should get at least 2.5 liters every day).
- Monitor yourself for symptoms if you’re exposed to someone who is sick.
- If you have small children, help them wash their hands properly.
- Get plenty of sleep (7-8 hours for adults, more for kids).
- Put hand sanitizer out at barbecues and parties.
